Change of Fate but 3 Years in MotoGP: Bagnaia Has Equaled His Idol Rossi’s Record While Marquez Was Cursed to Never Win Again

The difference in the situation between Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez was an interesting note that emerged in the 2024 Austrian MotoGP racing series yesterday.

Francesco Bagnaia achieved his 25th victory in the premier class after finishing first in the Austrian MotoGP race at the Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, Austria, Sunday (18/8/2024).

The dominant appearance was shown by the Ducati Lenovo rider .

After overtaking his main enemy, Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac), on the second lap, Bagnaia was unstoppable for the remaining 28 laps of the race.

The victory means Bagnaia has equaled the record of MotoGP legend Kevin Schwantz’s wins.

Just for information, Schwantz is the idol racer of Bagnaia’s own mentor, Valentino Rossi.

As a child, Rossi took part in minibike races with a replica helmet of the 1993 GP500 World Champion, albeit with a personal touch in the form of a Ninja Turtle doll on top.

“We grew up with myths and legends. Now, to see my name alongside his is crazy,” Bagnaia said, as reported by GPOne.com .

Bagnaia achieved 25 wins in MotoGP in a relatively short time, just three years.

Since finally breaking the egg at the 2021 Aragon GP race, Bagnaia has become the main rider to beat in MotoGP.

This year his streak has been even crazier. Bagnaia has equalled his highest number of wins in a single premier class season, with 7 in 11 races.

Even before achieving his first victory in MotoGP, Bagnaia was cursed because of a series of incidents while leading.

The first incident occurred at the 2020 Emilia Romagna GP when the 2018 Moto2 World Champion crashed while already far ahead in first position.

Bagnaia crashed again while leading the Italian GP the following year. Enough? Not yet!

When the Red Bull Ring hosted two MotoGP grands prix again in the same season, Pecco, as he is affectionately known, was unlucky in both.

The first week in Spielberg, tire problems hampered Bagnaia’s performance. He was able to lead until the race had to be restarted.

The following week, it rained at the end and he only finished runner-up because he lost strategy to Brad Binder who dared to use slick tires on the wet track.

Bagnaia finally got his first win at Aragon in 2021 despite facing constant pressure from Marc Marquez.

Like a change of fate, it was Marc Marquez who won.

Despite still being able to score two consecutive wins after being defeated by Bagnaia until 2021, Marquez then never won the top podium again.

Marquez also experienced a series of bad luck when he had created his opportunity by joining the Ducati squad even though it was only a satellite team.

Favored to win again since the beginning of the season, Marquez instead experienced bad luck, including when appearing on his favorite circuit.

At the GP Americas, Marquez’s aerodynamic device was damaged due to a collision with Jack Miller. Still ambitious to win, the Alien fell when he had already taken first place.

Meanwhile at the Sachsenring, aka the German GP, Marquez experienced a hat-trick of bad luck.

Marquez had an accident that caused an injury in free practice, made the wrong choice of tires in practice, and was accidentally blocked by an opponent in qualifying, causing him to start from 13th position.

In yesterday’s Austrian MotoGP race, the public was wondering, would Bagnaia have raced alone if Marquez had not had problems at the start?

Once again, Marquez was unlucky going back and forth, starting from the front tire which was ‘cold’ because the tire valve was damaged, meaning he had to change the rim before the race.

Then trying to bring the tires to optimal temperature by playing with the brakes, Marquez accidentally turned off the holeshot device that helps riders to accelerate as quickly as possible.

One, two, and three bad lucks were experienced because a slow start made Marquez collide with Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac) and dropped to 14th position.

Even though Marquez was able to show competitive performance in the race simulation in free practice. He also actually won the starting position on the front row.

At the Austrian GP it was finally 1029 days since Marquez last won. Even though the number of MotoGP races was doubled with the addition of a sprint on Saturday.

However, Marquez is believed to be about to end his curse. That was said by Ducati Team Manager, Davide Tardozzi.

Tardozzi believes Marquez will end his win drought before joining the Ducati factory team alongside Bagnaia in 2025.

“Marc has great potential and we will enjoy him next year. However, he will win a race before the end of the season,” he told Diario AS .

Marquez will get a big opportunity soon.

The reason is, MotoGP 2024 will continue with the Aragon GP racing series, whose circuit is dominated by left-hand bends, Marquez’s favorite on August 30-September 1.
