Ducati rider and four-time MotoGP world champion , Marc Marquez is still fasting for three years. Former MotoGP world champion, Jorge Lorenzo believes Marquez’s failure so far is due to the burden of his injuries.
Marc Marquez finished fourth in the Main Race of the 2024 Austrian MotoGP series at the Red Bull Riing Circuit on Sunday (18/08/2024).
As a result, it has been more than 1,000 days and almost 3 years since Marc Marquez last stood on the top podium in a MotoGP race. To be precise, the Emilia Romagna MotoGP in Misano in 2021.
It is very difficult for Marc Marquez to complete his total MotoGP wins from 59 to 60. Even though this season he has performed very well with Gresini Racing. The indication is that he has felt four podiums in the 2024 MotoGP Main Race.
However, with a contract with the Ducati manufacturer already in his grasp for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, Marc Marquez emphasized that this year is the moment for him to rebuild his strength after slumping with Honda for the past few seasons.
Marc Marquez had an average of eight wins per season in 2013 until he suffered an arm injury at Jerez 2020.
However, his last three wins in MotoGP all occurred in the 2021 season with the Honda RC213V motorbike.
He achieved three consecutive wins in the races at Sachsenring, COTA and Misano.
Fighting Injuries
Marquez suffered serious injuries to his right arm in a crash in the opening round of the 2020 season, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season.
He underwent four major operations on his arm between 2020 and 2022 to repair the injury, and has now made a full recovery.
But Jorge Lorenzo, who was Marquez’s team-mate at Honda in 2019, believes injuries are still weighing on him and are the main reason why he is yet to win at Gresini Ducati.
“The injury in Jerez 2020 I think took a toll on him physically. We have seen great champions, like Mick Doohan, winning four world championships with just one and a half legs,” Lorenzo told DAZN via Crash.net.
“I don’t think we have seen the last title of Marc Marquez, maybe, but it will not be easy for him to win the championship again, because he has two young riders in front of him.
“Now Jorge Martin will join Aprilia, but he has Pecco Bagnaia, who is younger than him, very fast and almost perfect.”
Lorenzo built his theory by pointing to the fact that Marquez was very dominant before his injury and said he still expects Marquez to fight for the championship this year.
But now what he needs is patience, tenacity, and concentration to at least be able to win again, amidst the many young racers.
“In some braking, you can see that the injury is weighing on him. All that combined makes a champion like Marc Marquez, with his best bike, even if it’s not a new one, still can’t win,” Lorenzo said.
“Maybe he will win with the 2024 bike? Maybe he will lead the world championship? I don’t know.”
