MotoGP Austria 2024 – Reputation Falls Further After Collision with Marc Marquez, Rossi’s Oldest Student: What Else Can We Do?

Prima Pramac racer, Franco Morbidelli, does not want to get caught up in the controversy over his incident with Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing) in the 11th series of the 2024 Austrian MotoGP .

Franco Morbidelli and Marc Marquez collided at the start of the Austrian MotoGP race at the Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, Austria, Sunday (18/8/2024).

This incident caused both of them to go wide off the track at the first corner and lose their chance to compete at the front.

Marquez finally finished fourth after dropping to 13th.

The eight-time World Champion’s chance to finish in the top three was gone. Even though he had good capital because he started from third position, the front row.

Meanwhile, Morbidelli dropped to 18th place. Avoiding a penalty, the 2020 MotoGP runner-up finished the race in eighth place.

The incident between Marquez and Morbidelli was investigated by the Stewards. However, no further action was taken.

“Unfortunately this was an unfortunate incident,” Morbidelli was quoted as saying by GPOne.com .

“Marc failed to activate the holeshot and went into Turn 1 at a different speed to the other riders.”

“He moved to the left to avoid (Jack) Miller and we both ended up going wide off the track,” added the oldest rider in the VR46 Riders Academy.

Marquez started the race slowly because his holeshot device died early due to pressing the brakes before the start.

The front tire temperature dropped due to an unplanned change before the race, causing Marquez to take an initiative that ended in disaster.

The failure to use the assist device for the start made Marquez the slowest rider in the first acceleration.

However, before the explanation came out, negative attention had already surrounded Morbidelli because he was considered to have acted up again.

Morbidelli’s reputation as a reckless rider emerged due to a series of incidents involving him.

Previously, at the British GP race, Morbidelli was given a  long lap penalty twice for hitting Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46) at the start of the sprint race .

Retiring at the Spanish GP race in late April, Morbidelli dragged Jack Miller off the track after falling next to him.

Last year, at the Qatar GP, Morbidelli was even slapped on track by Aleix Espargaro due to a series of aggressive overtaking actions between the two during… free practice!

The worst was perhaps during the Malaysian GP in 2022 when the racer who is famous for his “relaxed” jargon received two penalties at once in the race.

The first penalty, namely a long lap twice, was given because Morbidelli drove slowly in the opposing lane during free practice.

His punishment was added to a 3-second time penalty for touching Aleix Espargaro while competing for 10th place.

“I don’t know what he’s doing this year,” Espargaro groaned a year before his patience ran out, as reported by Crash .

“I don’t know if he’s here or on another planet, his mind. They almost give him a penalty at every GP, but he keeps doing stupid things.”

Morbidelli himself often gives indifferent reactions, meaning he doesn’t feel guilty.

Regarding the recent drama on the track that he experienced, the Italian-Brazilian racer only gave a reaction like shrugging his shoulders.

“I honestly don’t know what could have been done to prevent it because that’s how it happened,” said the Moto2 world champion.

“This is certainly something we have to address so it doesn’t happen again.”

Morbidelli prefers to see the bright side that he actually performed competitively and was able to overtake many riders.

“In MotoGP it is increasingly difficult to overtake because there is a small difference between the bikes,” he continued.

“Today, though, I made 10 overtakes and gained about 10 positions. In France I could have gained 11 positions.”
